Many local club Cowboy
Action Shooting events will have anywhere from 15 to 30 members
participating. They will be grouped into teams or posses with each posse
usually trying to have 10 members. The posse members are selected prior to
the shooting match start. Some flexibility in posse selection is allowed
especially if participants need to share guns or have strong objections to
being separated such as a family of new shooters.
The posse members share
some roles and responsibilities to keep the shooting event moving
smoothly.
- Experienced club members may be expected to man the
loading and unloading stations as safety officers observing proper gun
loading and unloading.
- Experienced club members may be called to count misses
and may also observe for procedural errors in the shooting sequence.
There are usually 2 to 3 members performing this duty.
- Every club member should volunteer to retrieve empty
brass after the shooter is finished using retrieval tools – the
“bullet picker-upper”.
- An experienced member will have an important function
operating the timer. This member will observe for procedural errors,
equipment malfunctions, and observe that the target shooting sequence
is followed.
New shooters generally will not be asked to perform
these functions. New shooters should not volunteer for too many roles at
first as everyone in the posse will understand that you are there to
“learn the ropes”, observe how things are done, and not make any dumb
mistakes.
Lesson learned from our
first shoot: Forget the camera at the first couple of shoots. It sounds
like a great idea to photographically document your first shoot, but you
won’t get many photos ‘cause you will be too busy!
