2002 - Your First Shoot – Loading Table Etiquette

Each shooting stage will have a Loading Table where you load your weapons and an Unloading Table where you unload your weapons. Certain things happen at each table.

Loading Table:

  • Bring the proper amount of ammo to the table for the stage you are about to shoot. Use bullet pouches or loading strips as a convenience.
  • Lay the long guns (rifle and/or shotgun) on the table with muzzles pointed down range. The shotgun action will be left open for safety reasons.
  • All muzzles will always be pointed down range. If allowed, pistols remain in their holsters except during the loading process.
  • Pistols may be left in their holsters before and after the loading process if the club rules allow this. As many shooters may be loading at the table space may be limited so pistols may be holstered. Otherwise place the pistols on the table with muzzles pointed downrange.
  • Do not load any weapon unless the Loading Table Officer (or other designated Posse member) is present and watching the loading process. This person is there to witness the loading operation, loading of safe rounds, loading proper quantity of rounds in pistols and rifles (remember shotguns are never loaded at the Loading Table).
  • After loading each pistol with proper ammo quantity fully cock the hammer and then slowly lower the hammer onto the empty chamber (you did remember the loading sequence for pistols?). Show the Loading Table Officer that pistol to prove the hammer is on an empty chamber. Remember the muzzle direction is always down range!
  • After Loading Table Officer is approved of the loading process of the first pistol holster it and proceed with the next pistol.
  • Load the rifle with the proper quantity of ammo while the Loading Table Officer witnesses.
  • Do not load the shotgun. It is always left unloaded until you actually use to shoot a target at the stage.
  • If you have questions, ask the Loading Table Officer. They are there to help you if you are unsure.
  • Thank the Loading Table Officer. We cowboy are supposed to be courteous.
  • After loading the weapons step to the edge of the stage and wait your turn. Remember all long gun muzzles are pointed skyward for safety during transport.

Unloading Table:

  • Hand carry all long guns with muzzles pointed skyward as you leave the stage and approach the Unloading Table. An Unloading Table Officer will be awaiting you to witness proper unloading procedures.
  • Cycle the rifle action a few times to prove the rifle is empty. Remember muzzle direction is always downrange.
  • Show the open action of the shotgun to the Unloading Table Officer. If a spent shell is still in the chamber remove it at the table.
  • Unload the pistol chambers while the Unloading Table Officer witnesses. Spin the cylinder while to prove the pistol is empty.
  • Your empty rounds that were ejected at the stage will be delivered to the Unloading Table. Collect these in a bullet pouch or loading strip for easy transport from the Unloading Table.
  • Thank the Unloading Table Officer for his assistance. We cowboy are supposed to be courteous.
Transport your weapons to your gun cart. Remember all long gun muzzles are pointed skyward for safety during transport.
