2005 - Your First Shoot – More Shot Shells

You step up to the stage and the instructions state that you will be shooting four shotgun knockdown targets. To complete the stage you must continue shooting until you knock down all targets.

You confidently load the first two into your Coach Gun, fire without a miss. Extracting the spent shell you grab for the next two from your shot shell belt and your fingers suddenly don’t work correctly. May because you are concentrating too hard on handling the Coach Gun; keeping it pointed safely downrange, keeping the barrel action open far enough to reload, looking for your shot shell reloads, etc.

Anyway you fumble the two new shot shells and one of them gets into the shotgun while the other falls to the ground. SASS rules make that fallen shell “dead” and not retrievable. You grab for another shell to load the other chamber, fire both rounds with one hit and one miss due to your frazzled nerves from the fumbled reload.

You dump the spent shells and grab at your shot shell belt only to find that you don’t have enough to load both chambers again. You only brought 4 shot shells. You walk away from the stage with a miss credited or worse a failure to engage penalty.

Next time resolve to carry more shot shells either on your shot shell slide, belt or in a pocket.
