2007 - Your First Shoot – Gun Faux Paux

Pardon the French, but there are a number of rules related to gun handling that are strictly enforced. You will be observed how closely you follow then and expect to be corrected when one is broken. You will be shooting real guns and real bullets – safety rules are really important in this sport. There will be many guns at the shooting stage either actively being used or ready for use. We want this sport to be fun and absolutely safe.

  • Sweeping the Crowd – We always consider a gun loaded whether true or not. Sweeping the crowd occurs when you are hand carrying your guns with the muzzles not pointed in a safe direction. All guns shall be carried in such a manner that the muzzles can never point at anyone else. The safest place for pistols is in their holsters and all long guns shall be carried with muzzles pointed skyward.
  • Five pistol rounds – This is an important safety for the Colt SAA pistols to that an accidental discharge does not occur if the hammer is against a loaded chamber. All six shot single action pistols will only load five shots. The hammer will always rest on an empty chamber.
  • Carrying long guns – All long guns (rifles and shotguns) will always be transported with the muzzles pointing skyward.
  • Shotguns – All shotguns will always be empty with the action open unless in use. The shotgun will always be staged empty and action open. Shotguns that are discarded after use will always be empty and action open.
  • 170-degree rule – All guns after being loaded at stages are either holstered or pointed downrange. The 170-degree rule is a region in front of the shooter where all loaded gun muzzles must point. This rule applies in particular for those shooters opting for a cross draw holster pistol. As the pistol is upholstered and re-holstered it must always follow the 170-degree rule requiring the shooter to twist the body. Strong side holster shooters do not need the body twist.
  • Staged Guns – Staged rifles are loaded and the action may be closed. Staged shotguns will always be staged with the action open and all chambers empty. Staged Guns – Staged rifles are loaded and the action may be closed. Staged shotguns will always be staged with the action open and all chambers empty. When required, long guns may be staged horizontally with muzzles pointed downrange with the rear of the trigger guard on the stage prop.
  • Rifles – Rifles will always be stored, either in the gun rack or on the gun cart, with the action open. Lever action rifles will always be stored with the lever in the open position.
