2008 - Your First Shoot – The Range

The shooting range will be divided into separate stages. Each stage may have a building or storefront as the shooting line. Nobody is allowed past the shooting line unless the entire range is declared “Cold” or safe. Nearby to each stage will be a loading table and an unloading table. The targets will be setup downrange from the shooting line. You may be shooting at a doorway or through windows.

To promote the sport enjoyment the target distances are not nearly as far as other shooting sports. The intent is not to make Cowboy Action Shooting a longer distance accuracy contest. Therefore, to quote the SASS Handbook, all targets will be of generous size. Typical targets are 16-inch square metallic plates. The targets are typically mounted on a stand that places the target 2-3 feet above ground level and the targets are tipped forward so that bullet strikes are deflected downward to the ground.

Separate targets will be setup for pistols, rifles and shotguns. Rifle and pistol targets will typically be of similar size and mounting height. Pistol targets will be at a distance of 6-10 yards while rifle targets will be located 15-25 yards from the shooting line. Shotgun targets are typically of a swinging type or a knockdown type setup 6-10 yards from the shooting line.

All of these targets are easily hit by novice shooters if they take their time at the shooting line.
