Prior to allowing new
shooters to participate in the main shooting events of a local Cowboy
Action Shoot you will need to demonstrate your general gun handling
skills and learn about the range rules and regulations.
You will be taken to a
stage where you will be observed (instructed if necessary) how to load a
pistol, rifle and shotgun.
You will be allowed to
shoot pistol, rifle and shotgun targets to learn one of the many variation
of target shooting sequences. The basic sequence you will likely be taught
is the Standard or Forward Nevada Sweep: five targets are setup in a row
indicated P1, P2, P3, P4, P5 or R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 or S1, S2. P is for
Pistol, R is for Rifle, S is for Shotgun.
You will be observed how
you handle your guns for safety reasons; for example the pistol is drawn
from its holster and not cocked until the pistol is pointed downrange and
nearly pointed at a target. Pistols may never be cocked while holstered
for standard Cowboy Action Shooting.
The shotgun, whether slide
action or lever action or break open action, will always be unloaded with
the action open when not in use.
Horizontally staged long guns will always have the muzzles pointed down
range. All long guns will be staged horizontally with the rear of the
trigger guard on the stage prop. |
