| 5001 - Tips
& Tricks – Little Nasty Tricks
|
| |
|
OK, you’re ready for the
range; you are getting all the stuff needed for a fun event. But watch out
for these little nasty tricks.
- If you shoot .38 caliber revolvers and .45 LC rifle be
sure to get your ammo right at the loading table. Don’t try to load
.38 bullets into the .45 LC rifle. The entire cartridge will slip
quite handily right through the entire barrel length!
- If you are a reloader be absolutely sure of your ammo
quality. Keep all experimental rounds absolutely separated from the
competition rounds. Don’t forget about the rounds that someone else
volunteered to load to your specifications using your progressive
press, especially if the volunteer has little or no experience with
your progressive press. Those “volunteer” rounds may be squibb or
misfires!
- Be sure your reloads will reliably fire in the guns
you plan to use at the club shoot. Misfires are to be avoided at club
shoots when you are under the timer. Many CAS members will “slick
up” their weapons by lightening the mainspring tension for easier
cocking and quicker action. Experience will show that a lightened
mainspring also means a lighter hammer fall onto the primer. Our
experience has shown that certain primers are softer and work very
well in “slicked up” guns, while other primers are harder and will
not work reliably in “slicked up” guns.
- If you and your buddy are sharing the same gun cart be
sure of which Coach Gun you grap in your hurry to the loading table.
If you are used to or may be required to use an external hammer Coach
Gun in your category but find you are fumbling for the hammers that
don’t exist it won’t hurt your aim but it will waste time along
with the embarrassment and possibly a penalty for the wrong shotgun
for the category.
