Although the six-gun is
chambered for six bullets, all Cowboy Action Shooting events only allow
five rounds to be loaded. This is a safety rule that should never be
broken because the Colt SAA (Single Action Army) and clones do not have
any modern safety devices such as transfer bars. A live round left under
the lowered hammer can accidentally be discharged if the hammer is jarred
or the pistol is dropped.
The proper sequence for
loading five rounds into the SAA pistol is to load round #1, skip an empty
chamber by hand rotating the cylinder, then load rounds #2 to #5. After
round #5 is chambered, close the loading gate and fully cock the hammer.
This will rotate the cylinder so that the skipped chamber is now aligned
with the barrel. Carefully lower the hammer to its full rest position. The
hammer should now be down on an empty chamber. |
